Norwich, VT Apartment

2024 Design

While the basement area was still in the early stages of renovation, I consulted in room layout to decipher the best use of space in the 4 rooms the client was looking for. Based on my suggestions, we decided on a bedroom directly to the right of the living room space, to provide the Tennant with natural lighting in their room, as opposed to that space being used for a kitchen.

As this is a basement unit, there are only windows on one wall/direction of the apartment, so the main concern was figuring out how to extend and reflect as much of that natural light as possible throughout the space so it didn’t feel quite so dark. Keeping the opening to the kitchen as large as possible allows more natural light to filter into the space. In addition, painting the walls a light color (not necessarily white) allows for more light to bound around in the space.

Using the dimensions I recorded on sight, I was able to put together this visual model of the space and how it could be furnished and used in the future (software: floorplanner). This apartment is still being renovated, but I will return to working on this project once they are ready to furnish the space.
